Select your Topic and Specific Perspective

• Select your topic from the list (teen parenting)
• Determine a specific perspective for that topic (teen father)
• Think about how a potential client in that situation might be feeling (stressed, depressed, coping, neglected, involved, responsible, etc.)

Brainstorm Search Strategies

• Print and complete the Keyword Brainstorming Exercise worksheet: Brainstorm keywords and develop a search strategy.
• Example:
  • (teenage father* OR adolescent father*) AND (stress* OR depress* OR coping OR neglect* OR involv* OR responsib*)

Complete a Database Search

• Perform your search strategy in the Social Work Abstracts database.
  • View a tutorial on how to locate Social Work Abstracts.

• Retrieve the required number and variety of articles according to your assignment requirements.
• Revise your search strategy as needed:
  • Brainstorm additional terms for your main topics and subtopics
  • Too many results? Narrow down your search results by introducing an additional subtopic (use the AND operator).
  • Too few results? Broaden your search results by introducing additional synonyms for your topic and subtopics (use the OR operator)
